Southern Hush Puppies are the perfect crispy bite-sized treats that pair well with seafood or any Southern-inspired meal. These golden, crunchy fritters are made with a combination of cornmeal and flour, fried to perfection for a satisfying crunch in every bite.
- Ingredients:
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup green bell pepper, finely chopped (optional)
- 2 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
Directions:
- In a large bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).
- In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk and the beaten egg.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in the chopped onion and bell pepper (if using).
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large, heavy pot over medium heat to about 350°F (175°C).
- Using a spoon or small cookie scoop, carefully drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding.
- Fry the hush puppies for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oil with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as tartar sauce or honey butter.
