Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (for cooking)
- 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
- 1 tablespoon butter
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Directions:
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, then form the mixture into 4 even patties.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the hamburger steaks for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add the thyme and bring the mixture to a simmer. Let the gravy cook for 5-7 minutes, or until thickened.
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning the gravy and onions over the top. Simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes, until the steaks are heated through.
- Serve the hamburger steaks with the onion gravy, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.
