Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce

  1. Ingredients:
    • 6 cups stale bread, cubed (French or challah works well)
    • 4 cups milk
    • 4 large eggs
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
    • 1/4 cup butter, melted
    Vanilla Sauce:
    • 1 cup powdered sugar
    • 1/2 cup milk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • Pinch of salt
    Directions:
    1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
    2. In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread and melted butter; toss to coat.
    3. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Pour the mixture over the bread and gently stir to combine. If using, fold in raisins.
    4. Let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the liquid.
    5. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.
    6. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the pudding is set.
    7. While the pudding is baking, prepare the vanilla sauce by whisking together the powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and salt in a small bowl until smooth.
    8. Serve the warm bread pudding drizzled with vanilla sauce.
